Minutes of
THE WESTERN MICHIGAN SOCIETY FOR INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE
18 NOVEMBER 2002


A regular meeting of members and directors of The Western Michigan Society for Industrial Heritage was held at Coopersville, Michigan on the 18 November 2002, pursuant to notice mailed to the membership.

  1. The meeting was opened by president, Ed Hanenburg at 7:00 pm.
  2. Roll call was taken. Seven members were present which satisfies the bylaw quorum of five members. Members present: Duane Bowman, Mary Chubinski, Tom Chubinski, Philip Cok, Ed Hanenburg, Carl J. Sinke and Cindy Timmerman.

    Jim Budzinski was present as a guest to provide Historical Museum input.

    Absent: Bob Birkholz, Jeff DuPilka, Fred Florshinger

  3. Notice of the meeting and agenda was reviewed. Upon motion made (M. Chubinski), seconded (Timmerman), and approved, the agenda for the meeting was was passed as presented.
  4. Minutes of 24 September 2002 were reviewed. Treasurer Cok suggested additions for clarification. Upon motion made (Timmerman), seconded (M. Chubinski) and passed, the amended minutes of 24 Sept. 2002 were approved.
  5. Treasurer's report was distributed. Upon motion made (T. Chubinski), seconded (Sinke) and approved the treasure's report was accepted and is attached as part of these minutes. Treasurer Cok reported that there was one invoice for paper stock for membership certificates paid to Marketing Management Services, Inc. for $47.55 and income of 0.81 interest since the last meeting.
  6. Membership
    A). Secretary Cok reported there are 13 paid memberships (2-Lifetime & 11 annual) and one outstanding, overdue invoice. A letter was sent to the one member requesting payment and reiterating the membership payment/by-laws requirements.
    B). Carl Sinke said he would place a notice in the C&M Railway newsletter solicitating membership and donation requests.
  7. Handicap Car Project.
    a). No further information on the Combine Car was available due to Fred Florshinger's absence.
    B). Tom Chubinski and Carl Sinke will follow-up with Clock Conversions to get pricing on handicap conversion plans and costs.

  8. Master Plans
    Need feedback from C&M Railway about long-term master plans regarding the Spring Lake Depot and other potential projects suitable for the Historical Society to pursue.
  9. The floor was opened for discussion with Jim Budzynski about Historical Museum projects and plans.
    A). Museum had two main projects in process: (1) Interurban Restoration & (2) Sawmill addition.
    B). Jim reported the need to establish a millage that would support the museum and maintain its viability after Lil & Jim retire.
    C). Visitors are increasing due to the Marketing efforts of the Discover Coopersville Project. Visitors were up by 1000 this year to 3000. Joint cooperation of the City/Farm Museum/RR & Historical Museum is the key.
    D). Jim emphasized visitors want something to see and a reason to stay in the community. Visibility of the rolling stock of the RR is essential and stores/restaurants need to be open for weekend (Sat. & Sunday) visitors.
    E). Jim reported the Interurban car is not being restored to running condition. It would need additional reinforcing of the framework and a propulsion mechanism. There is another car that is currently being used as a housing unit in New Richmond that could possibly be restored if purchased, transported and restored.
  10. Member Comments:
    A).Tom Chubinski suggested we need clarification of the focus of the Industrial Heritage Society.
    B). M. Chubinski encouraged continual focus on handicap car and in obtaining refurbishing costs.
    C). Phil Cok reported on further correspondence with the Byles.
    D). Duane Bowman reported on getting calls at home about wanting to paint Jeff DuPilka's steam locomotive.
    E).Russ Osterhart suggested we establish a time-line for the handicap car project.
    F). Cindy Timmerman said she will pursue marketing the train to senior groups emphasizing that it will generate questions regarding handicap accessibility.
    G). Ed Hanenburg suggested placing a year-end donation appeal ad in the local papers. Cindy and Phil will work on this.
    H). Carl Sinke urged everyone to read Ryan Byle's Future Plans document. A copy is on the website.

  12. The next meeting of the Industrial Heritage Society is scheduled for Monday, December 9 2002, at 7:00 p.m. in the Coopersville Farm Museum.
  13. Upon motion made (Cindy), seconded (Cok) and passed, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
