THE WESTERN MICHIGAN SOCIETY FOR INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE

A special meeting of members and directors of The Western Michigan Society for Industrial Heritage was held at 7:30 pm, at Coopersville Farm Museum, Coopersville, Michigan on 21 April 2003, pursuant to notice called, e-mailed and/or faxed, 18 April 2003, to the membership.

  1. The meeting was opened by president Hanenburg at 7:30 pm.
  2. Roll call was taken. Members present: Duane Bowman, Mary Chubinski, Philip Cok, Fred Florshinger, Ed Hanenburg, Ross Osterhart, and Carl J. Sinke. Seven members present constitutes a quorum (5 required).

  3. Notice of the meeting and agenda was reviewed.
    Upon motion made (M. Chubinski), seconded (R. Osterhart), and approved, the agenda for the meeting was was passed as presented.
  4. Minutes of the previous meeting (17 March 2003) as well as a treasurer's report will be presented at the next, regularly scheduled meeting.
  5. Approval of bills
    Treasurer Cok presented one bill for approval. A bill from Mark-Pack, Inc. for $34.93 for purchase of a check cancellation stamp was presented for approval. Upon motion made (Osterhart), seconded (Florshinger), and passed. Approval of bill payment was made.
  6. Membership Resignation
    Member Duane Bowman had indicated to Secretary Cok his desire to cancel membership in the Society due to his "Snow Bird" practice and absence during the winter months. Discussion about his ability to participate as a member followed.
    Upon motion made (M. Chubinski), seconded (R. Osterhart) and unanimously approved, the membership resignation of Duane Bowman was rejected.
  7. Handicap Car Project
    A). The 44 seat, Pullman, Santa Fe coaches in Cincinnati, OH have been confirmed to be sold to another party.
    B). Fred Florshinger has indicated that the Walcott coach currently on the C&M property may be an additional candidate. It has floor problems but Fred thought Mr. Walcott may donate the coach to the Society and contribute funds to repair the floor.
    B). The Stainless Steel clad coach, I.D. RPCX#1504, owned by Ray Kammer currently situated on the C&M siding has been offered for sale to the Industrial Heritage Society for $25,000.
    - This is a similar 1950's era coach with 40 KW JD Generator and includes heating/cooling plant, lights and holding tanks.
    - Initial terms are 1/4 down ($6250) with the balance ($18,750) due June 1st.
    - The coach has had a new floor and carpeting installed but currently has no seats. Mr. Kammer plans to install tables against the walls, moveable chairs and replace paneling which all would be included in the price.

    C). Discussion followed on the condition of the coach, improvements planned by Mr. Kammer, and the terms.

    Upon motion made (C. Sinke), seconded (M. Chubinski) and approved, it was decided to have the Kammer coach, the PRR coach, and the Walcott coach evaluated by Terry Weaver for structural integrity with a written report supplied to the Industrial Heritage Society for evaluation.

    Fred Florshinger will contact Mr. Weaver Tuesday night, 22 April 2003, to initiate the process and complete as soon as possible.
  8. Upon motion made (M. Chubinski), seconded (R. Osterhart) and approved, the meeting was adjourned at 8:10 pm.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Industrial Heritage Society membership is Monday, 16 June 2003. The meeting will be held at the Coopersville Farm Museum, 375 Main St., Coopersville Michigan at 7:00 pm. All members are encouraged to attend.
